For now Hannibal and I are at something of a mutually assured destruction, impasse.
If I remove the reward of civility by making sweeping -and unprovable- statements about what he is capable of, then he no longer has any reason to be civil. If he pushes me to a point where burning and salting the earth behind me is my last recourse, well he knows I am capable of doing just that.
The uneasy truce plays out like this.
I have named certain individuals as out of bounds when it comes to the games between himself and I. Yourself, Jack and Natasha for the moment. I've sent similar texts to Jack and Natasha and told Jack that if he feels the need for protection for his submissives to let me renegotiate the boundary lines with Hannibal.
I would ask the same of you, James. I will be doing my utmost to keep you shielded from him, but if I could ask that you in turn try not to let yourself be lured into his machinations, that would help.

I considered that as Plan A until I realized eventually you'd end up in jail.

[ Which was why he had kept a low profile when it came to Stefano. ]
I appreciate the expression of affection behind the offer, James but we both know shooting him would be a temporary resolution at best. He's going to play his games and my only real move, if I want to have any agency in what happens, is to play along.
I just needed you, Jack and Natasha to understand why I am not doing more to interfere with his agency within our numbers.

Doesn't mean I have to like it
But I get it.

I wake up more tired than I used too.
[ He'd begun to believe in hope, love and though they were all broken pieces, there was a light that shined and brought laughter and joy with it. Now Will woke to the tension that had been his historical companion. The defensive mental positioning to be prepared to repel the next attempt from Hannibal.
The return of the sense of isolation that Hannibal worked so deftly to keep wrapped around Will in the never ceasing effort to alienate him from everybody and keep him dependent upon the 'good' doctor. It was exhausting. ]

I can tell
I need you to not let this become something you think you gotta protect me from
Whatever it was like for your friends back home, it's not gonna be the same thing with me
I'm not so easy to kill, and I know better than to listen to him
I'm with you, you know that right?

[ Will was thinking of their contract, of their promise to each other to talk about the things that could come to lay between them. About his promise to ensure that when he needed something, he communicated that need to Bucky and they talked.
Typing over text was not talking. ]
My thumbs will fall off due to all the monologues I'd be trying to write for you.

[ Considering he's given up on the hope that Steve is coming back, and he hasn't talked about that either.
Makes them even, at least. ]

After that, though he felt he could see the desperation growing in Barnes and he wanted to help, Will had recognized that the best help he could give was room. Room for Bucky and Jack to process the loss together, because Will's relationship with Steve had been awkward and moving in to comfort Bucky would have felt akin to dancing on a grave.
Bucky and Jack needed one another, Bucky and Natasha needed one another and Will understood that the best way he could help, was respect and support those needs.
He came to them now, mostly because Hannibal had forced his hand and Will knew that letting things wait would only risk Hannibal finding a crack to wriggle into. ]
Thank you.

I'll talk to you later.
