IC INFORMATION

Character Name: James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes
Canon: MCU / Falcon & The Winter Soldier
Canon Point: Post F&TWS
Background: Link.

Suitability: He'd definitely be able to engage with things — especially given all the groundwork Sam's laid down. He'll roll his eyes and sigh heavily about it, but at the end of the day he can't sit idle. Dude's a soldier at heart, he's always gonna fight for a cause. Doing good for people is how he plans to heal from all the bad he did as the Winter Soldier. That won't change just because he's in another world.

Powers:

Artificially Enhanced Physiology: Barnes was one of many prisoners of war used in Zola's quest to recreate the Super Soldier Serum and received an alternate formula variation. There were no apparent effects at the time of his rescue by Steve Rogers, but the changes brought on Barnes' body were sufficient to let him survive plunging into an icy river at the bottom of a fall that should have killed him. Zola further refined Barnes' body in the Winter Soldier Program, ultimately creating an enhanced soldier with physical abilities equal to the Captain America. Like Captain America, he too has early levels of superhuman conditioning, due to his Super-Soldier physiology.

Enhanced Strength: As the Winter Soldier, Barnes's physical strength is immensely enhanced to the early levels of superhuman condition by a series of treatments performed on him by HYDRA scientists. He has used his legs and right arm to strike enemies with tremendous force and his physical might is easily on par with Captain America.

Bionic Arm: HYDRA also removed the remnants of his severed left arm and replaced the missing limb with a cybernetic one. The bionic arm gives him extraordinary superhuman strength superior to that of Captain America, though not quite on par with that of Spider-Man. Winter Soldier was able to rip open a S.H.I.E.L.D armored SUV, rip apart Falcon's EXO-7 suit, and smash concrete by punching it. With his bionic arm supporting his already enhanced natural strength, the Winter Soldier was shown to be able to overpower Captain America in a fight.

Enhanced Speed: Winter Soldier's speed is tremendously enhanced beyond the peak of human potential, moving into the early levels of superhuman condition. Bucky's speed is equal to both Black Panther and Captain America, as he was able to stay ahead of them with a slight head start. In combat, he can easily keep up with the extremely agile Black Widow and Black Panther.

Enhanced Durability: Winter Soldier's bones and muscles are apparently vastly denser and more resilient than a normal human's. He even managed to survive a fatal fall from immense heights into Daube River in the Swiss Alps. Arnim Zola's further experiments greatly fortified his physique to the extent that he routinely leaps from significant heights onto hard surfaces and lands without any apparent injury.

Enhanced Stamina: Winter Soldier's musculature produces far less fatigue toxins during physical activity than the musculature of an ordinary human, allowing him to exert himself at peak capacity for hours before tiring. Hence, he could endure the Clash of the Avengers and the later showdown at the HYDRA Research Base without showing signs of fatigue.

Enhanced Agility: Winter Soldier's vastly enhanced agility is superior to even Olympic gold medalists. He could quickly leap on top of midsize cars in a single bound and do complicated acrobatic flips to avoid gunfire into cover.

Enhanced Reflexes: Winter Soldier's reflexes are enhanced to extraordinary levels. His reflexes are responsive enough to catch Captain America's shield being thrown at him at a high velocity. He was also able to catch enemy grenades thrown at him, dodge fire from Falcon's Steyr SPPs, and leap on top of a moving car accelerating towards him with pinpoint accuracy.

Regenerative Healing Factor: Winter Soldier's body is able to heal with extraordinary speed and efficiency, that are beyond of a regular human being, though he is unable to regenerate missing limbs. This may be one of the factors of his survival from the Swiss Alps. Also, the injuries he had received during his battle with Iron Man healed in a matter of days without bruises or scars.

PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.

The most significant event in Bucky's life was not a pleasant one: getting blasted off a speeding train in the alps and plummeting to what should have been his death, only to be recovered by HYDRA. Through torture and brainwashing, they eradicated his sense of self, repressed his memories, and turned him (quite literally) into a killing machine. In a way, Bucky basically has three incarnations — the man he was, the Winter Soldier, and the man he is now. He's still recovering from his trauma, it still impacts him every single day. His mental health, his dreams, his motivations, they all revolve around his guilt and finding ways to overcome it. Figuring out who he is now and letting go of the past is an ongoing process.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?

Bucky is exceptionally morally good. He's so committed to doing the right thing and fighting for the cause he believes in, he's willing to devote (and give) his life to it. It took him a while to reconcile his desire to be good with his instinct to fight; the two seemed like mutually exclusive concepts, and so he spent a long time trying to refrain and live a peaceful civilian life. It didn't work, it wasn't him, and the guidelines given to him by his therapist (don't do anything illegal, don't hurt anyone) didn't quite fit with his need to do what he believes needs to be done. Sam helped him understand the motivation that feels right for him: to be of service. Outside of that, when it comes to judgment calls and decision-making, his moral compass is generally "What do I think Steve Rogers would do?"

What quality or qualities do they admire most?

Bucky respects people who are willing to stand up for what's right, no matter the cost, and no matter who it is they're standing up to. It's hard to say whether he was influenced by his friendship with Steve, or if his friendship with Steve existed because of this, but either way it's a trait that will instantly appeal someone to him. It's one of the reasons why he pushed Sam so hard into taking up the mantle, before he learned about the reality and the complexities surrounding it. Secondary to this, Bucky admires loyalty. He has it in spades himself, it's arguably one of his largest personality traits, and so getting it back as good as he gives or seeing it in others always earns his respect.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?

Bucky Barnes loves everything about himself.

Just kidding, the guy is a mess of conflict and trauma. He spent years as the Winter Soldier, it's a part of him and likely always will be, and he absolutely resents it. He has an incredibly low sense of self-worth, and generally doesn't believe he deserves happiness when he took it away from so many people.

What is their sign, and why?

Bucky's sign is strength — which has absolutely nothing to do with his super soldier abilities. It's the sign of protectors, which is something he spent his whole life doing. Protecting Steve before the war, protecting his country during it, protecting the world from Thanos, and protecting the shield & its legacy from entities that would sully it. He's willing to — and has — laid down his life in the name of things he feels he needs to protect.

NAME: James Buchanan Barnes
CANON: MCU
AGE: ~101
CANON POINT: Post Civil War, pre Black Panther

HISTORY: linked.
PERSONALITY:

To understand Bucky’s personality requires being able to segment him into three parts, then find a way to take all of those uniquely separate entities and bring them together again. This is something he finds himself challenged to do every day, and figuring out who in the hell he even is anymore is a constant point of development for him.

To begin chronologically, we have the man he was originally. From the streets of Brooklyn in the 1930s, growing up with three sisters and being the only male child it was all but inevitable he’d develop both a sense of duty and innate tendency toward being a caretaker. Stumbling across a grade school Steve Rogers only fostered that impulse, though it brought something new to the table: the tendency to jump headfirst into danger in a display of loyalty to his best friend.

In addition to all of these things, Bucky also comes across as a remarkably upstanding man. He's charming with women, he's documented as being a straight A student and an athlete, and it's very likely he did his best to live up to the expectations placed on a man of his age in that time period. Interestingly, his friendship with Steve Troublemaker Rogers and his predisposition toward dark, deadpan humor indicate a contradictory undertone, so it's likely he was only charming and well-adjusted on the surface. Given the strain of the great depression and how it must have impacted a family with four children, that's hardly a surprise.

More importantly, loyalty and bravery will become a consistent theme throughout most of this period of his life, demonstrated in his loyalty to his country in the form of serving in the war, loyalty to Steve in the form of refusing to abandon him in times of duress and potentially lethal situations, and loyalty to who he truly believes his best friend to be once he’s given the choice about whether or not to follow Captain America into battle.

It’s his bravery that allows him to recover from the traumatic experience of being taken prisoner and being subjected to experimentation. None of this is to say he doesn’t experience the fear or the emotional devastation that comes with war, but one of the most consistent traits about Bucky is his ability to be self-contained and regulate his emotions. Aside from short bursts of feeling that escape him, Bucky demonstrates a remarkable tendency to school his facial expressions and only allow them out in the form of micro-expressions when nobody’s looking. It suggests a rigid control over himself, and a fear or aversion to vulnerability.

Rigid self-discipline and methodical duty allow him to do his job as a sniper, but they’re taken to an utter extreme once Hydra gets their hands on him. After his fall and subsequent retrieval from the Nazi deep science division, Bucky is systematically broken and disassembled. Through a combination of torture, drugs, and intensive shock therapy, everything that is human is stripped from him. He’s given a new personality, a new strict set of traits that he can’t deviate from.

Duty to the mission he’s assigned at all costs, including life and limb. Ruthless efficiency without mercy. Lightning-quick responsiveness with the ability to creatively problem solve in the heat of combat. Most importantly, the unshakable need to follow orders. The asset he became has no empathy, and it can see every weak point or strategic advantage in a given situation.

Although Bucky does his best not to let himself reflect that machine anymore, there’s no real denying the fact that a lot of it was him. A different version, a version outside of his control, but the thoughts and actions and decisions all came from him and are still very much a part of his skillset.

His time as the Winter Soldier has granted him a permanent form of guilt, knowing what he’s capable of and knowing on instinct without a second thought how he could best incapacitate the people around him. Unfortunately, that’s hardly the only guilt he experiences. Having a fully-formed serum-enhanced vivid memory of the atrocities he was tasked to commit as the Winter Soldier means he can replay all of the horrors he considers himself at least loosely responsible for. The weight of all of it isn’t something he’ll ever be able to shake, and it’s that consistent sense of duty and responsibility that keeps him from trying to place the blame on anyone but himself.

When he has the opportunity to let go of the memory of who he once was and the sins he’s committed, he’s had a slow but steady opportunity to build himself back up from the ground. He’s had time to ingratiate himself into society, into new cultures, into new populations with the kind of patience and goodness that only comes with the deepest of perspectives to ground him. He’s not easily shaken and he isn’t quick to anger, and so the lack of emotional outbursts after his time as the Soldier are not solely due to his perfected mask of emotional control. They’re also from wisdom, and from a capacity to care so deeply thanks to the trench dug into him by suffering.

It has, however, left him with a very dry and fatalistic sense of humor. Gallows humor was always popular among soldiers in the trenches, and that black irony has only gotten more ingrained in him after everything he’s been through. He has a tendency to let out flat, toneless statements meant in utter irony, typically directed at the absurdity of the situation he finds himself in.

He’s also become incredibly blunt and to the point about things. He doesn’t beat around the bush when it comes to how he’s feeling, about the emotions he perceives in others, or about the reality of a situation. There is no sparing his own feelings nor the feelings of others when an observation needs to be laid upon the table. That might be some of his leftover ruthless efficiency wrapped around his deep caring, or it might just be the product of a man who is so incredibly tired he doesn’t have the emotional energy to be false.

It’s also worth mentioning that Bucky is highly perceptive. Before and after the war he had a tendency to slip into the background of a situation and just observe the goings-on of it, clocking people and expressions to evaluate privately on his own time. It’s a skill that’s beneficial as a sniper, as a fighter, and as a man constantly on the run. He can often take in the nature of a situation and draw quick, accurate conclusions about their outcomes - take Endgame for example, wherein he didn’t have to exchange a single word with Steve to anticipate what he was going to do.

Despite all of his skill, his training, and the good he brings to battles, he does not consider himself a leader. He doesn’t relish the thought of a fight, and if left to his own devices he likely wouldn’t be a leading proponent of change. It’s very possible this isn’t just because of how burnt-out he is, but also because he no longer feels confidence in his own ability to make decisions. Having done what he’s done, there’s a sense of uncertainty or perhaps a sense that he doesn’t deserve to be the one calling the shots - especially if it involves the potential to get more people killed. He tends to take up second in command roles better, falling into a point-man position and offering his wisdom or his observations to someone more naturally inclined to make the call.

If the time does come wherein it falls on him to make difficult decisions, Bucky’s probably going to make the right one. Although he’s very aware of strategic plays and the most unempathetic, efficient way to solve them, Steve’s influence throughout his entire life overshadows it. In times of doubt or uncertainty, he uses Steve as a sort of moral compass and gives it the ole WWSD.

It’s still a lot of work for him to reconcile a history that pulls him three different ways, so his reservations and stoicism can probably be attributed to needing to take a second to evaluate what he would have done, what he could have done, and who he actually wants to be now.

SPECIES: Human
APPEARANCE: link
SKILLS: non-enhanced skills:
-multilingual (estimated 27 languages)
-superior hand to hand combat, like don't let me understate this bc that shit be mind blowing
-advanced weapons handling including knives, small arms, large arms, and literally his arm arms
-somewhat related, he's a crackshot marksman
-acrobatic flippy-dos

NEW POWER: memory manipulation

At its lowest level, Bucky will only be able to alter or restore existing memories for duration under 10 minutes. He will also have a natural resistance to having his own memories manipulated, as a passive side-effect.

POWER REASONING: Bucky spent 70 years with his mind being routinely erased, wiped utterly clean. Even after he began to claw his way back to person-hood, he spent months and months writing down every scrap of memory he could get his hands on. His biggest pain point and therefor one of his greatest needs is control over his own mind.

⬡ Personality:

Bucky Barnes’ personality can best be compared to a venn diagram, comprised of two or three distinct personalities combining, only encompassing who he truly is on a daily bases somewhere in the overlapping middles.

The original circle, the man who he was at the very start, is Sergeant Barnes. He’s a loyal and compassionate man, sticking true to both the people he loves and the causes he fights for. He goes above and beyond for friends and family, for his country, and gives his everything to the things he deems worth it. Beyond just those two defining trains he’s also an incredibly social man; he carries a quiet charisma and a sarcastic, dry wit that makes him charming and appealing to women, strangers, and peers (largely made evident by the impressive number of dates he’s gone on, and the respect he earns from his company during the war). He’s not excessively outgoing, doesn’t go out of his way to draw attention to himself, but seems to be comfortable in crowds and one on one alike. He’s skeptical, grounded, and observant, unimpressed by big promises that are ultimately unrealistic (such as Stark’s flying car prototype, or the figurehead of Captain America outside of the man behind the mask). He’s a great shot, a strong man in his own way, and generally morally good.

A secondary small but admittedly darker, more dense circle is composed of the Winter Soldier. A Russian-made elite Hydra assassin with no conscience and no need for personality traits that don’t suit mission purpose, it’s a strategic tactical personality with mindless, ruthless violence and immeasurable combat skill. The winter soldier speaks a number of languages even Bucky doesn’t realize until he hears, knows an enormous array of weapons, fighting styles, survival tactics, vehicle operations such as helicopters and motorcycles, and ways to hide from the eyes of governments and individuals alike. He is a method to completing a mission objective personified. He follows orders by any means necessary, and his means are vast, calculated, and unfaltering.

The last, most recent circle is made of the man he’s become after regaining free will, put together with only spotty memories of his past initially. He’s an inherently broken, fractured person with a guilt complex the size of a mountain. He’s a man who knows how to fight but tries not to, a man who appreciates the quiet and compassionate people of Romania or Wakanda, who runs when he can but stands his ground when he can’t. Some of his sense of humor remains intact, though it’s occasionally clouded in darkness and bitter self-deprecation. He keeps to himself in part because he feels he has to, because he’s not sure who in the world his enemies could be but also because he’s spent a century being out of touch with reality. Technology, pop culture, and social norms have evolved leaps and bounds from what he’s used to, although he does a decent job picking up on things and integrating quickly. His time as a depersonalized assassin has taken a big hit on his social skills, but he gets by with gentleness and by saying exactly what he believes to be the truth without filtering it or beating around the bush. Good or bad, intimate or distant, he’s frank in conversation and in voicing his doubts.

From these three distinct personalities and times in his life he makes up himself, pulling from one of the sources over the other when the situation best suits him. He has since regained the majority of his memories from both of his prior lives, and has worked intently on healing the worst parts of his mind. Despite that, though, he still has underlying layers of self-loathing and instability, and being in a setting that will test both his control and his ability to break others as he has been broken will be a real challenge for him.

This may be one of the factors of his survival from the Swiss Alps. Also, the injuries he had received during his battle with Iron Man healed in a matter of days without bruises or scars.

Master Martial Artist: Winter Soldier is an extremely skilled and formidable martial artist and hand-to-hand combatant, excelling at improvisation and weapons handling. Originally, Barnes was a three-time YMCA welterweight boxing champion. Later, as the first Winter Soldier, Barnes received vast training from HYDRA, as well as the United States Armed Forces. Combined with his enhanced physical abilities, Barnes became a dangerously capable master assassin who can slaughter dozens of enemies alone, take on and even overpower extremely skilled combatants such as Black Widow and Falcon with relative ease, being in charge of training the other Winter Soldiers, and going toe-to-toe with the likes of Black Panther and even Captain America himself. The two engaged in a brutal one-on-one fight, both matching each other with every move, though Rogers was ultimately able to defeat him in their second duel. He later beat Rogers after being released by Zemo, catching him off guard. Barnes also single-handedly killed up to a dozen well-armed Quinjet pilots in a single encounter, and escaped uninjured. Bucky later overpowered a suitless Tony Stark, Sharon Carter, and Black Widow, all in rapid succession and fought evenly with Black Panther, although he was pressured and could not defeat him, chosing to flee instead. Barnes also held his own repeatedly against T'Challa wearing his Panther Habit and although he was briefly outmatched by Iron Man in Mark XLVII Armor, he later managed to beat him to submission. He employs a mixed martial arts that include elements of Kali knife fighting, Boxing, Taekwondo, and Krav Maga.

Knife Mastery: Winter Soldier excels in knife fighting with an emphasis in Kali knife fighting. The Winter Soldier usually resorts to his combat knife in close quarters combat. He usually holds the knife in his natural hand and uses his bionic arm for support should he need more force to overpower a downward stab or toss it between hands to advance his assault.

Master Marksman: Barnes is highly proficient in handling firearms with remarkable precision, even prior to being turned into the Winter Soldier. During World War II, he shot a HYDRA operative that even Captain America did not see until he was down. As the Winter Soldier, he became an even deadlier master marksman. He accurately fired a single round through Black Widow's stomach and into a nuclear scientist that she was protecting, killing him. Winter Soldier is also capable of making long range shots without the use of a rifle, for example, shooting Nick Fury multiple times through the wall of Steve Rogers's apartment and from the top of another building. As the Winter Soldier, Barnes has caught and handled Captain America's Shield on two occasions and showed impressive ability in doing so. He was also able to use his gun to swiftly take out many Outriders during the Battle of Wakanda.

Master Assassin: Winter Soldier is a master assassin. Ever since he's been brainwashed, Winter Soldier has lived in complete anonymity with most of the intelligence community not even believing he exists. He's been credited with over two dozen of HYDRA's most crucial assassinations in the last 50 years. He was even able to shoot Nick Fury while himself outside of Rogers' apartment, and shoot through Black Widow to take out his target.

Master Acrobat: Due to his extraordinarily enhanced agility and reflexes, Winter Soldier has shown immense capability in using flips to evade fire such as when he flipped to cover when he was being shot at by Falcon's Steyr SPPs. He could also maintain balance of a moving motorcycle he was utilizing while engaged in a fight with Black Panther.

Expert Pilot: Winter Soldier was able to hijack a Quinjet after killing the pilot.

Multilingualism: Barnes speaks his native English, as well as fluent Romanian and seasoned Russian (albeit with a thick accent). It is shown that he can also understand (and possibly speak) German. He most likely is able to speak and understand a multitude of other languages as well, seeing as he mentioned that the other Winter Soldiers knew over thirty languages.

Like Captain America he too has early levels of superhuman conditioning, due to his Super-Soldier physiology.

Bionic Arm (he won't have this at the start of the game thanks to the time of his canon point): HYDRA also removed the remnants of his severed left arm and replaced the missing limb with a cybernetic one.

CHARACTER

Character Name: Bucky Barnes
Character Canon: MCU
Character Age: 101
World / History: here
Canon Point: Post IW
AU Details: Naw

Personality:

A Russian-made elite Hydra assassin with no conscience and no need for personality traits that don’t suit mission purpose, it’s a strategic tactical personality with ruthless violence and immeasurable combat skill.

He’s an inherently broken, fractured soul with a guilt complex the size of a mountain. He’s a man who knows how to fight but tries not to, a man who appreciates the quiet and compassionate people of Romania or Wakanda, who runs when he can but stands his ground when he can’t. Some of his sense of humor remains in tact, though it’s occasionally clouded in darkness and bitter self-deprecation. His time as a depersonalized assassin have taken a big hit on his social skills, but he gets by with gentleness and by saying exactly what he believes to be the truth without filtering it or beating around the bush. Good or bad, intimate or distant, he’s frank in conversation and in voicing his doubts.

From these three distinct personalities and times in his life he makes up himself, pulling from one of the sources over the other when the situation best suits him. He has since regained the majority of his memories from both of his prior lives, and has worked intently on healing the worst parts of his mind, both on his own and through Wakandan therapy. As such, he’s still growing into the person he chooses to be and still has a lot to discover about himself, his interests, and what he plans to do in the future. It’s a day-by-day basis.

Integration Questions

how will your character handle being assigned a leadership role:

Generally Bucky is not a leader; he prefers to be the second in command, enforcing the shots and providing counsil. That being said, if nobody else is capable or if he's forced into the role he'll take to it with solemnity and carry out what needs to be done without complaint. He would take a very 'lead by example' position, and actively do what he's asking other people to do.

how will your character handle being assigned an antagonist role:

He would come at it with equivalent solemnity and hate it with every moment. He'd be very much a tortured villain, pulling the sad eyes and apologizing as he carries out atrocities. Despite his attitude, he would make a really excellent villain through sheer talent and skill alone. Seventy years as an assassin will do that for you.

how will your character handle the implication that they’re not real / are a clone:

Bucky will have a hard time wrapping his head around it; after all the shit he's seen and done it will almost feel like just another drop in the bucket for his long and ridiculous life. He'll take some time to sort it out and ultimately compartmentalize it, slip it into the background of his mind as a fact and actively not think about anything other than survival. When an opportunity arises for him to take action, though, he will give his all to fight to get out or end this simulation.

Bucky will be confined to the limits of a normal human being at peak physical condition.
Essentially, he will be slower, weaker, have less endurance, heal less quickly, and most importantly ya boy will be able to get DRUNK.

He's been credited with over two dozen of HYDRA's most crucial assassinations in the last 50 years. He was even able to shoot Nick Fury while himself outside of Rogers' apartment, and shoot through Black Widow to take out his target.

Master Acrobat: Due to his extraordinarily enhanced agility and reflexes ,Winter Soldier has shown immense capability in using flips to evade fire such as when he flipped to cover when he was being shot at by Falcon's Steyr SPPs.

In-Game Section
In-Game Name: James Winters
Meta/Non-Meta: Meta
Abilities/Powers:

Exactly the same as in canon, the above section goes into specific detail. Adding any more than he already has might be considered unreasonable.

In-Game History/Memories:
-In a fashion similar to his own history, he grew up in a lower middle class setting. His mother works full-time to keep food on the table for himself and his sisters, and his father is a distant figure that works for the Guardian task force as a non-meta officer.
-He’s taken Steve on as a brother and best friend, and the relationship heavily influences both of their developments.
-He joins Guardian when he’s old enough to, intent on making his father proud and because he can’t see a career for himself that doesn’t involve standing up and fighting.
-He plays a role in Steve’s adopted kid’s life, spoiling the kid with sugar and curse words.
-He makes a great addition to the Guardian task force, and is often assigned to classified jobs / missions, completing them with a soldier’s devotion
-One extremely classified mission goes awry, there are a number of casualties and Bucky himself is injured in the process. It results in a huge chunk of memory loss and the complete amputation of his left arm, requiring the subsequent prosthetic Guardian fixes him with. He can’t remember the mission or a few days/weeks leading up to it, and generally gets pretty mentally fucked up for a bit. It's likely this incident that acted as a catalyst for his meta abilities.
-Takes an indefinite leave of absence from Guardian and bounces out of the city for a while, doing a piss poor job of communicating that with Steve, friends, or family. Tries to process everything / do some rehab / tries to piece together the memories but isn’t very successful, and instead spends time figuring out who he is and what he wants to do now.
-Upon apping him in he’ll be returning to the city for the first time in about a year.

Any Differences in Personality in-game:

Without the memories of murdering dozens of people, he’ll be lacking in the overwhelming guilt and fear that he normally carries. Instead it’ll be replaced with a general sense that the’s done something wrong / that something is generally not good, and will be attributing that to the Incident and the following period of isolation he’d taken away from the people he cares about. Aside from that, his personality will be largely the same: the mix of who he was before the incident and the development he’s had after, leaving out only the darker more ruthless aspects of the Winter Soldier.
